James H. Scully Jr., M.D., Educational Fund

Background:
James H. Scully, Jr., M.D. is the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of the American Psychiatric Association (APF). The Foundation established the Medical Director’s Fund to support education and research activities within the APA or its affiliates. The Foundation manages the Fund, reviews requests for grants from the Fund, and ensures that they are used in accordance within the parameters of the Fund.

Purpose and use of funds:
The Fund can be used to support education and research activities that:

  • Improve the quality of care for patients with mental illness
  • Advance the prevention of mental illness
  • Raise awareness of mental illness and its treatments
  • Increase access to mental health services

The Fund does not support public policy or lobbying activities.

Review of Requests:
Requests for grants from this Fund can be used only for activities within APA or one of its affiliates (American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education [APIRE], American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. [APPI] or the American Psychiatric Foundation [APF]. Requests must be submitted in writing to the Foundation and must include a description of the project for which funding is requested, a description of the impact of the project, intended outcomes, brief biographical sketches on key personnel, and a complete budget with budget justification for the activity. The Executive Director of the Foundation in consultation with the Medical Director shall review and forward requests to the Grants Committee if they are within the established parameters of the Fund.

Reporting:
At the conclusion of the term of grant, a report shall be submitted to the Foundation. This report must outline the program supported by the grant, its impact and outcomes, and how funds were used. Any unspent funds must be returned to the Foundation.
