American Psychiatric Foundation Announces Recipients of 2007 Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health
ARLINGTON, Va., The American Psychiatric Foundation (APF) has named three nonprofit organizations and one individual as the recipients of the fourth annual APF Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health. The awards were presented at the 2007 APF Annual Benefit in San Diego, CA. Each organization or individual was presented a plaque, along with an award of $5,000 in honor of their work and commitment to advancing minority mental health. The awards are made possible through an unrestricted educational grant from Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc.
The following organizations received an award:
- Mount Sinai Hospital Assertive Community Treatment Team of Toronto, Ontario, Canada received an award for the ethno-racial specific program created to serve the marginalized, severely and persistently mentally ill ethnic minority populations who are often uni-lingual and unable to access mainstream mental health services. To reach the target minority populations, Mount Sinai used a culturally competent team of clinicians from similar backgrounds as their clients.
- Center for Multicultural Human Services in Falls Church, VA received an award for the development and implementation of a mental health program responding to the complex mental health needs of vulnerable, low-income immigrants, refugees, survivors of war and other trauma in an extremely diverse community in the DC metropolitan area.
- Family Health Centers of San Diego received an award for the work it is doing to provide psychiatric services, individual and group therapy, medication management, and case management to more than 100,000 uninsured and medically underserved individuals in San Diego.
- Henry Acosta, MA., MSW, LSW, was awarded for his work at the New Jersey Mental Health Institute where he continually strives to improve mental health service delivery systems for minority populations. His contributions have led to the improved provision of quality mental health services for Hispanics through training, educational materials, public service campaigns and policy development initiatives.
"We are proud to support the Awards for Minority Mental Health as part of our commitment to help eliminate health disparities among underserved populations," said Hiromi Yoshikawa, chairman and chief executive officer of Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. "Otsuka congratulates the award recipients and applauds their efforts toward advancing minority mental health."
The APF Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health honor psychiatrists and mental health programs that are undertaking special efforts to increase public awareness of mental health care, increasing access to mental health services, and enhancing the quality of care for underserved minorities, especially those who suffer from severe mental illness.
"I congratulate all of the recipients of the Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health, said Altha Stewart, M.D., American Psychiatric Foundation President. "It is APF's goal to ensure that mental health care reaches people where they live. I commend the award winners for doing just that."
